Inquiry Post 1: AI and Resume Development (Tools, Questions, and Learning Plan)
For my inquiry project, I am working with Aiden to explore AI-assisted resume development and digital portfolios. As a Computer Science student preparing for future roles, I am interested in how tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and AI resume platforms can support (or potentially limit) the resume-building process.
This topic connects to digital literacy because it involves understanding how to use AI tools effectively rather than relying on them without evaluation. It also relates to AI in hiring systems, where resumes are often filtered through automated systems before reaching recruiters. Understanding how these systems work is important for building a strong and authentic professional identity.
Some of the key questions guiding my inquiry are:
- How effective are AI tools at improving resume quality?
- Do AI-generated resumes become too generic?
- How well do they perform in ATS systems?
- Can AI accurately generate structured formats like LaTeX?
- What ethical concerns exist, such as bias or authenticity?
As part of my skill development, I plan to use AI tools to generate a resume in LaTeX and then refine and evaluate the output myself.
To guide my progress, I have created a rough learning plan:
- Week 1: Research AI tools and hiring systems + create a baseline resume
- Week 2: Test and compare different AI tools (ChatGPT, Gemini, etc.)
- Week 3: Generate and refine a LaTeX resume using AI
- Week 4: Evaluate results, including effectiveness, limitations, and ethical considerations
Throughout this process, I will document my learning using blog posts, screenshots, and possibly short screen recordings to demonstrate how the tools work. I will also curate and reflect on the resources I use, including articles, tutorials, and AI-generated outputs.
Accessibility will also be considered by ensuring clear structure, readable formatting, and proper organization in both my resume and blog posts.
Overall, my goal is to understand how AI can be used effectively and responsibly in professional contexts, while also developing practical skills that are relevant to my future career.
