Week 5 Reflection: Responsible AI Use and the Skills Behind It

In my previous reflections, I explored how students use AI tools to support learning, how AI-generated content should be evaluated, how expectations change in professional environments, and how AI features can support accessibility. Building on these ideas, I wanted to reflect on the broader question of what responsible AI use actually requires. As AI tools like ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot become more integrated into everyday tasks, using them effectively requires more than just knowing how to access them. It also requires strong digital literacy and awareness of ethical considerations such as over-reliance, accountability, and data privacy.


What?

AI tools are increasingly embedded in both academic and professional workflows. Students use AI to generate explanations, summarize information, and create practice material when studying. In professional environments, tools like Microsoft Copilot can assist with drafting documents, summarizing meetings, analyzing data, and automating repetitive tasks.

During my internship last summer, I saw several examples of how AI tools could improve productivity. Features like meeting captions, transcripts, and automated summaries made it easier to review discussions and understand large amounts of information quickly. In some cases, AI was also helpful for quickly parsing through large blocks of text to highlight relevant variables or information that I needed. At the same time, it became clear that AI-generated content still required careful review. Even when outputs appeared clear and confident, they were not always fully accurate or complete.

I also watched a video discussing how AI is affecting education and learning habits. The video highlights how widely AI tools are already used by both students and teachers, even in situations where institutions attempt to restrict their use. It also raises concerns about over-reliance, noting that students may turn to AI to complete tasks quickly rather than fully engaging with the material. Another point discussed is how large language models can confidently produce incorrect information, or “hallucinate,” while many users accept these outputs without questioning them. These observations reinforce the importance of critical evaluation and responsible use when relying on AI-generated content.

So What?

These examples highlight an important challenge: while AI tools can significantly improve efficiency and accessibility, they also require users to take greater responsibility for evaluating the information they receive. AI systems often present outputs confidently and in well-structured formats, which can make them appear authoritative even when they contain errors or incomplete explanations.

This creates a situation where the user must actively question and verify AI-generated content, rather than passively accepting it. In learning environments, failing to do so may reduce opportunities to develop deeper understanding or problem-solving skills. In professional environments, it can lead to inaccurate information influencing communication, decision-making, or analysis.

The ability to use AI responsibly therefore depends heavily on digital literacy. It is not enough to simply know how to prompt an AI system; users must also understand the system’s limitations and remain accountable for the final result.

Now What?

Reflecting on these ideas has made me more intentional about how I approach AI tools in both academic and professional contexts. Rather than treating AI as an authority, I want to treat it as a support tool that assists with tasks while still requiring human judgment and verification.

Moving forward, I want to focus on developing habits that support responsible AI use. This includes verifying important outputs, being cautious about sharing sensitive information with AI systems, and ensuring that AI tools support my own thinking rather than replace it.

These reflections also contribute to my broader inquiry into how tools like Microsoft Copilot can be used efficiently and responsibly without over-reliance. As AI becomes increasingly integrated into everyday workflows, developing strong digital literacy skills will be essential for ensuring that these tools are used thoughtfully, ethically, and effectively.
